Bull Market or Bear-Market Rally?

from Dshort.com
February 5, 2009 updated each market day
My "Four Bad Bears" chart — superimposing today's bear with the Dow Crash of 1929 and the S&P 500 declines in 1973-1974 and 2000-2002 — has a new design update. I've adjusted the horizontal axis to show elapsed months rather than market days. The 1929-1932 Dow series posed a problem because at that time the market was open six days a week. The new chart scales the Dow to match the elapsed time for the three S&P declines (hat tip to Will Pattison, who gave me some Excel pointers).

The real question, of course, is whether the current market has been in recovery since the low of November 20th or is destined to trade lower. Only time will tell!

For a more detailed analysis of bear market recoveries, see my Bear Bottoming charts.
