STIMULUS UPDATE

Congressional approval of U.S. stimulus expected Friday
Both houses of the U.S. Congress are expected Friday to approve President Barack Obama's $789 billion economic stimulus. Building public support for his plan, Obama said at a rally in a Caterpillar plant, "When they finally pass our plan, I believe it will be a major step forward on our path to economic recovery." Reuters (13 Feb.)

Stimulus would kick in with 2 distinct phases: Economists predicted that the U.S. stimulus would start moving the economy toward growth in the third quarter of this year, but the big impact would be felt in 2010. Rising retail sales and consumer spending should be the first signs of the economy getting back on its feet, economists said. After that, look for infrastructure spending to boost employment, they said. Bloomberg (13 Feb.)

  1. Why is it I keep thinking of Woody Allen's/DreamWorks animated movie "Antz"?? Millions of worker ants just toiling away without questioning their evil overlords...

Some specifics from the NYT. I really like the part about 65% subsidy for COBRA health insurance premiums---but only if you got canned between September 1, 2008 and December 31, 2008.

  2. my mother was wondering why people weren't marching in the streets. remember the depression? everyone thinking they were to blame for their 25% joblessness? and cobra. what a joke. you wouldn't take it anyway becaue you can't afford the premiums. But I gotta pay for congress to get their healthcare whether they work or not. what a country.
